What Operating System is the iPad Going to Run?

Many have waited a number of years for the Apple Tablet. Each announcement there was hope for the tablet and finally it has actually arrived. The iPad is here. One thing that many are focused on now is the operating system that it runs. Is it running a stripped down OSX or something else?

Those who were hoping to have a small tablet computer that was like your OSX operating system might be a bit let down. The iPad is using a version of the iPhone's operating system. Even the cheapest sub 0 netbooks running Linux can handle multiple applications at one time and that hardware is quite a bit less powerful than what the iPad has.

One can hope though since this is the first version. The desire from customers for multitasking through multiple applications will surely push Apple to come with with a solution. If not, it's possible that someone will come up with a hack for the device. Jailbreaking the iPad won't have as much problems as it is when jailbreaking the iPhone because there is no chance of losing the phone capability.

Is It Possible to Learn Guitar on the Internet?

When I was a child learning guitar I was limited to either finding a local teacher or learning from a book. Today the Internet, the iPad, iPhone and all their apps are now providing a range of alternatives. While this new technology may appear to be an alternative to the traditional guitar teacher I believe it should compliment a real life teacher not replace them. I will explain why but firstly let's look at the strengths of today's technology.

The Internet

The Internet contains almost everything anyone would ever want or need to know about guitar and anyone of almost any age can access to this free or inexpensive information. Guitarists from all around the globe are continuously contributing new information which means the Internet is now an extremely powerful learning tool. Guitar students of all levels can find something of value online. Video lessons, music clips, PDFs, tabs, chord charts, online programs and its mostly free.

iPad, iPhone, Apps etc.

App (short for application software) allows you to turn your phone or iPad into a computer. Thousands of new apps are being released every week and many are designed for guitar. These apps can easily teach students everything from songs to guitar skills. Its only a matter of time before apps for just about any aspect of learning guitar will be available.

So why would you need a guitar teacher?

A student could in theory learn guitar without the aid of a real life teacher using all the online information and tools but in my opinion would be missing an important part of the learning experience. The guitar teacher's role includes many of the skills that don't transfer well via technology such as technique, feedback, motivation, mentoring but good teachers can also show students how to use the Internet for best results and therefore save valuable time. Remember the Internet, iPad etc are tools. Guitar teachers who keep up with the technology will be worth their weight in gold. Many of the guitar students spend (waste) hours and hours looking for websites that may or may not help them learn to play guitar. There is so much information that students often get lost or overwhelmed. Today's guitar teacher should be able to do this research and pass it on to their students or even better should have a website with helpful links. A teacher who can do this will make your lessons much more valuable.

The teacher network bonus.

Popular guitar teachers and music schools should also be seen as network hubs. A hub is a central point in a network. Professional guitar teachers become connected to students of all ages and interests as well as other teachers and musicians and often the music industry itself. Teachers are therefore in a great position to be learning and gathering information from their students and peers and than passing that information onto students. Going to a teacher should therefore be a chance to tap into the teacher's network. Students are always introducing new music, ideas, websites etc to their teachers so the teacher can in turn share this information with each student. Teachers should not be seen as strictly teachers in the traditional sense but as connectors connecting students to the local or even global guitar scene. As a teen it was my teacher who first introduce me to playing in a band via a rock school program (not unlike Jack Black in the movie 'School of Rock') and from there I went on to play professionally. A good teacher will be seeking out opportunities to bring students together and take them to the next level.

Effective lessons

Guitar teachers should aim to take advantage of the available technology if there is an advantage. I do believe guitar teachers should follow some traditional methods of teaching and the Internet should be seen only as a tool albeit a very powerful one. A good example are songs. Teachers look out for websites that give precise clear instructions on how to play a song accurately. They can then recommended to their students. In the past teachers would tab out songs (using up valuable lesson time) but in today's world this is simply wasteful. Students are paying the teacher to do something that has already been done and can be found on the Internet at no cost in time or money. Time better spent on other areas.

Nook Color Vs iPad - Move Over iPad?

Barnes and Noble has just released it's new "Nook Color" for the holidays, a color touch screen ebook reader. At its cheaper price point, it makes sense to ask "How does it compare vs the more expensive iPad?" Here's a detailed look at the Nook Color vs iPad. Which is the better deal?

Let's first take a look at the memory capacities of the two devices. The iPad is available in the 16, 32 and 64 GB models, obviously more expensive for the higher memory. The Nook Color comes with 8 GB, but can be equipped with expandable memory.

How Much Are Ipad

Wireless and 3G capabilities differ for both the devices as well. The iPad charges extra for the 3G+Wireless models, whereas the Nook Color is only available in a wireless model.

The sizes of the screens differ quite a bit. Nook's design is at 8.1 inches high by 5 inches, and the iPad is quite a bit bigger at 9.56 inches by 7.47 inches. That obviously gives Apple's device more screen size.

Both screens are made with the same IPS screen technology. That allows for 178 degree viewing angles of the screen.

The Battery lives of the two devices are comparable as well, at around 8 hours usage time before needing a charge.

The BIG Differences Between the iPad and Nook Color?

Apple's aim with their design was to create a product that can do anything that a computer can do, but with the advantage of being extremely portable. That means it can be used as a media library and player, an ebook reader, and also a portable computer.

Of course it's fair to say that Apple has changed the entire game as well, so it can behave as an Apple device does, with the ability to use 1,000's of apps that each have their own use with the Apple devices.

The Nook is being marketed as an ebook reader, but it does much that the iPad does, up to a point. It can also be used as a small computer in the way that it surfs the web, stores and plays media, and can also be used as an ebook reader.

The NC, however, does not have the benefit of using many, many apps developed by a community of developers like Apple's device does. In fact the apps could be seen as non-existent for the Nook Color.

The prices differ considerably for the two devices. The Nook Color is going for 9 whereas the cheapest iPad is currently priced at 9. Who knows if this new release from Barnes and Noble will trigger a price drop for Apple. Time will tell.

So there are some very large similarities apparent when comparing the Nook Color vs iPad, but only to a certain extent.

Kindle Fire And iPad 2 - A Comparison Review

It's amazing; only two or three years ago the market for tablet and tablet computing really wasn't very big. Indeed, laptops were still the rule, rather than the exception in the fight for market share and then came Apple's first iPad and the landscape shifted. It was more like the landscape turned upside-down as Amazon came after Apple with its own line of tablets called Kindles and Barnes and Noble brought out the Nook.

Here's an even more interesting fact that though Apple shifted the market forever with its iPad, it created an opportunity that others are filling - lower cost devices that are nearly as good. For example, Amazon recently brought out its new Kindle Fire and I've had a chance to put my hands on one and look it over. Apple's iPad is still list priced at US 9. Some users may like the 7-inch Kindle Fire form factor as it is smaller and easier to handle than the larger iPad and other than having both WiFi and 3G access - no big issue in most of the country - and dual cameras, both devices are pretty much the same.

Also I forgot to mention that you are locked into Apple's IOS operating system and its proprietary applications - yes there are lots of them. What this means is that Apple will let you play with Apple devices. The Kindle Fire, on the other hand, can share apps with any Android-based device, Windows 7 devices and any Internet-ready device. So, after using both devices, the user might ask himself why should he spend 0 more for a proprietary device, when an open device like the Kindle does nearly everything the Apple will do and actually has better pixel density (169 ppi versus 132)? Yes, some users may admit the Kindle Fire is smaller - about two inches -- but it also offers the same 16 million colors that the Apple iPad offers.

Like the Apple iPad the Kindle lets you view the image at different angles automatically. It also offers the same type of dual-core 1 GB processor speed, so speed is not an issue and neither is image technology because both of them offer in-plane switching technology (the images move as you move the device). And, after using the Silk browser that is available on the Kindle Fire, which is an open-style browser, would the user want to go back to a proprietary browser like Apple's Safari? It is true that Apple has loosened the fetters a bit on its browser so that you can use it under Windows, but you still need to download additional support software to make it work with your Windows device.

The advantages one might see to the Apple iPad: Its larger display; Dual camera; 3G access capability; Larger internal memory 16 GB versus 8GB for the Kindle Fire - not really an issue as there is automatic switching to a cloud drive for storage.

Maybe for some users the Kindle Fire makes more sense. Okay, the user would have to give up two cameras by not having the iPad, but he is also not locking himself into Apple's closed system. The Kindle Fire also offers background updating and syncing with your library and other choices. Its choices seem to be larger than Apple's librarying. Another item that some users may find important, email, is a non-starter because the it handles your email needs too. It also handles a wide variety of formats including DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, AZW files and more. Finally, it recognizes security formats such as WEP, WPA and WPA2 that our router offers.

For some users considering the type of intuitive touch-screen interface, lighter weight and smaller size (which are more convenient) and very reasonably sized screen, the Kindle Fire may come out on top in comparison, specially if one also considers the price. It's just that the supposed advantages may just not be worth the extra 0 for the iPad when the Kindle does nearly the same thing, only in a smaller package.

32G- Since a movie does take up around 1 GB (depending on the movie!), movie buffs might want to go with a more memory like the 32G model.

64G- At 64G, you can basically put a ton of information on this device and not have to worry about it. You could put a good library of movies, music, and ebooks.

Bottom line- It depends on your intended use of the iPad obviously! One could easily get the lowest memory and just plan on erasing and replacing movies as they are watched. Others who want their entire library of everything available will want to get the larger memory.

2) WiFi only or WiFi and 3G- There will be two models of each memory size. They will be "WiFi", or "3G and WiFi".

WiFi Models- The WiFi only models will be able to hook up to the internet in any WiFi area. You will just be using the actual internet at that point through a wireless router.

3G- This feature will allow you to access the internet from anywhere there is 3G service. It should be noted that a 3G data plan will be necessary and cost extra.

Bottom Line- WiFi uses the internet. 3G you need a data plan. If you go abroad, you'll need to turn on international data as well. This isn't like the "Kindle" where the 3G just works.

So what's the best deal?

We've yet to see what the most popular models will be for most consumers. The memory size is obviously up to how much one can spend and how much "stuff" they want to put onto it.

If you are considering spending your hard-earned money on an iPad to improve your productivity you may be interested in knowing that there is yet another option now available. The Kindle Fire has many of the same features as an iPad but at only a fraction of the cost.

This will push your cost for an iPad from 9 for the 16GB/Wi-fi model to 9 for the 64GB/Wi-fi/3G model. With the additional cost of an iPad vs. a Kindle you do get many more features: a 9.7" (diagonal) touch screen, cameras (front and back), longer battery life, built-in speaker, and a microphone. If you are tech savvy and comfortable with the additional features this is definitely a plus.

For those who may want a simpler interface the Kindle Fire is intuitive and even first time users will quickly find the music or books they may be after. When reading, the Fire will be easier on your wrist and hand with its lower weight but when it comes to video the iPad has the advantage of a larger screen.

When comparing price, size, portability, ease of use, weight, and visual experience, hands down the Kindle Fire is the winner here, and will probably cut into Apple's iPad2 sales. Using Your iPad on an Airplane With "Airplane Mode"

If you have ever flown on an airline, you will notice that during take off, and before landing, the flight attendant will ask that your turn off all your electronic devices such as your phone. This is done to protect sensitive airline electronics and prevent interference with flight navigation and communication systems. As a safety measure, this is the best way to guarantee that all devices that emit wireless signals are safely turned off. The iPad is more than just a wireless device as it allows users to watch movies, listen to music, play games, read books, and much more. And all this can be done without the use of the WIFI, cellular 3G, or Bluetooth antennas.

When flying on an airplane, you can put your iPad into a special mode called "Airplane Mode." This automatically turns off the transceivers for your iPad's WIFI, Bluetooth, and cellular 3G.

iPad 2 Vs Galaxy Tab 10

For the past couple of weeks, I've been testing out Apple's new iPad 2 against its most immediate competition, Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1v. I should point out before I start this that I've been using an iPad (version 1) since Australian launch last year, whereas the Galaxy Tab 10.1v is much more of a newcomer. Android tablets have been available since last year, but the 10.1v is the first model in Australia to use Google's tablet-specific version of Android, informally known as "Honeycomb". Make of that potential bias what you will.

Galaxy Tab 10.1v: 9

The two pricing variants on the iPad2 are there as Apple offers it in both a with and without 3G option; if you see the cheaper iPad2, it's the one that doesn't offer mobile broadband, just WiFi. It's pretty obvious that this is a clearly tied pricing race for comparable tablets, though. There are catches to both approaches that may not be immediately evident. It's possible to spend quite a bit more on an iPad2 -- up to 9 -- but that comes with increased storage capability, up to 64GB, where the 10.1v is a stock, set, unchangeable 16GB. On the flip side, the 10.1v, which is exclusive to Vodafone, is offered by the carrier under contract from as little as a month with data included. From a budgetary perspective, that's pretty compelling.

Look & Feel:

Apple's whole marketing schtick behind the iPad2 is that it's slimmer than the original iPad, and this is indeed true; at 8.8mm thick it's slender and tapered beautifully. The Galaxy Tab 10.1v is by comparison a chunky beast, but this hides something of a hidden advantage. The back of the tablet is textured and gently contoured inwards, making it easy to grip even without a case. By comparison, the iPad2's back is relatively slippery unless you pop it in a case -- at which point the thickness advantage goes away.

iPad2: Screen: 9.7" 1024x768 Processor: Apple A5 Dual Core 1Ghz Memory: 16GB-64GB

Galaxy Tab 10.1v: Screen: 10.1" 1024x768 Processor: Nvidia Tegra 2 Dual Core 1GHz Memory: 16GB

Again it's pretty neck and neck; the larger screen of the 10.1v and improved resolution are nice, but the fact that it's a fixed memory size is an oddity in the Android world and sticks out like a sore thumb.

Performance:

This is a considerably more subjective thing, and a lot harder to call. There's no doubt that Honeycomb is a much better version of Android than the previous tablets offered, as the native applications make better use of the screen space, the onscreen navigation is very snappy, the mail client works well and the browser is just that little bit quicker than the iPad2. Using the online Browsermark benchmark, I recorded a score of 88717 for the Galaxy Tab 10.1v compared to 70310 for the iPad2. If your application needs are modest, the Galaxy Tab 10.1v delivers nicely. The problem for Android is that there's still a dearth of genuine "Honeycomb" applications for Android, and running older Android applications is a very hit and miss affair. Some scale up to the full screen neatly, while others occupy only a tiny area of the screen, or shrink everything down so small as to be useless. Comparatively, the iPad2 not only has a rich array of native applications on offer, but also scales up the vast majority of iPhone applications with only a little bit of pixel chunkiness as a drawback. Honeycomb should improve over time in this regard, but right now it's not quite there.

Conclusions:

The 10.1v is a solid iPad2 competitor, but it's not quite there yet, and it's something that Samsung's all too well aware of. The company has already announced that newer models of the Galaxy Tab 10 will be forthcoming in slimmer frames and possibly with more storage. It's good to see competition to Apple in this space, but for right now, I'd still say that the richer application infrastructure supporting the iPad2 makes it a better buy. If you're staunchly anti-Apple for whatever reason, I reckon it'd still be worth saving your money for more Android tablets, and critically more native Honeycomb applications to hit the marketplace.

Apple iPad Vs Apple MacBook Pro

While the iPad is generally meant to be a link in products from the iPhone to the MacBook Pro it has a vast number of functions that can be compared to that of the MacBook Pro. The iPad is considered a tablet PC and offers the ease of touch screen technology and portability. The MacBook Pro is considered a laptop PC and offers a bit power and functionality then the iPad while still being relatively portable.

Users of the iPhone may find that the iPad offers much of the same features as the iPad. The difference between the two being that the iPad has a much larger view area. If you are looking for a gadget that offers some basic functions of a PC such as internet, e-mail, word processing, and some applications then the iPad is perfect for you. The MacBook pro on the other hand is a fully functional PC with many more capabilities and infinitely more digital storage space. When designing the iPad I think Apple leaned a bit too much towards the iPhone.

While the size of the iPad is much more convenient to carry around then the MacBook Pro, users will notice a loss in power due to it's smaller size. Being one of it's major selling points, the size of the iPad has been reported to have over heating issues when exposed to direct sunlight. Most major electronics are not meant to handle the heat of direct sunlight over extended periods of time however with something like the portability of the iPad, designers should have taken this into consideration.

The MacBook Pro has been on the market for much longer then the iPad. I am sure that the MacBook Pro had it's share of quirks when it was first produced as well. If you are thinking of adding an iPad to your gadget arsenal consider waiting till the second model comes out. This will give designers a good idea of what can be improved on and you won't be wasting your money on a prototype model.

All in all I think at this point the macbook pro has my money. I personally own an iPhone and a laptop PC. I can't think any reason why I would want anything in between. If the iPad operated more on level with the MacBook Pro I could definitely see the attraction to this gadget's portability perk. Before completely putting the iPad out of mind I would like to see where Apple decides to go with it in the next few years.
